I'tikaf, a spiritual practice during the month of Ramadan, holds great significance in Islam. It involves secluding oneself in a mosque for worship and reflection, typically during the last ten days of Ramadan, with the intention of drawing closer to Allah. This practice is deeply rooted in the traditions of the Final Prophet ﷺ and is an important means of spiritual rejuvenation. The Final Prophet of Allah ﷺconsistently did I’tikaaf in the last ten days of Ramadan.
One of the most significant aspects of I'tikaf is the opportunity it provides to seek Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree, which is better than a thousand months according to the Quran (Surah Al-Qadr 97:3). Muslims who engage in I'tikaf during this period increase their chances of experiencing this blessed night, using it as an opportunity to make heartfelt supplications, ask for forgiveness, and pray for personal and communal blessings. The night holds immense spiritual significance, and I'tikaf serves as a means to fully devote oneself to worship in pursuit of it.
Mother of the believers Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqua رضی اللہ عنہا has narrated that the final Prophet of Allah ﷺhas stated, “Whoever did I’tikaaf with faith in order to earn reward, all of his previous sins will be forgiven. (Al-Jami-us-Sagheer. pp.516. Hadith 8480)
By the grace of Allah Almighty, at Faizan-e-Madinah, Sacramento, we are blessed to observe the Sunnah of I'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan. Participants are only required to bring their clothing and sleeping bags, as both Suhoor and Iftar for the Mu'takif are provided by Faizan-e-Madinah. During I'tikaf at Faizan-e-Madinah, we focus on learning proper Quranic recitation with Tajweed, acquiring essential Islamic knowledge, and dedicating time to Nafl Salah and continuous Quranic recitation.
